Brentford finally secured their first away win of the season at the 10th attempt after beating bottom club Southampton 5-0.
The Bees’ last win on the road in the Premier League came on May 11 when they beat Bournemouth 2-1, and two goals from Brian Mbeumo – plus one each from Kevin Shady, Keane Lewis-Potter and Yoan Wissa – ended their campaign. Long dry in style.
As a result, Southampton remained positioned at the bottom of the standings, 10 points away from safety. They have now lost all three of Ivan Juric’s matches, conceding eight goals and scoring just one.
Brentford – correctly, in hindsight – sensed their opportunity and proceeded to control the game from the start, so it was no surprise when they were already ahead after just six minutes.
Mikkel Damsgaard beat Joe Aribo to the ball, pushed it past Leslie Ugochukwu and fired a beautiful pass which Kevin Shady met first time to turn past Aaron Ramsdale.
It appears that the second will follow shortly after. Wesa made several saves from Ramsdale, Christian Norgaard headed against the crossbar and Damsgaard shot inches wide after tipping the ball away from Ugochukwu with great skill.
However, the Bees could not find a way to double their lead, and the Saints provided a timely reminder of how quickly a game can change just before half-time when Aribo crossed the ball for Tyler Dibling to fire the ball wide of the post.
But the screw started turning early in the second half. Sepp van den Berg canceled the second goal after the Video Assistant Referee spotted Wessa’s foul on Jan Bednarek, before Wessa shot the ball over the crossbar when Shadi’s header passed him the ball one-on-one.
It was 2-0 when Brian Mbeumo and Wesa equalized intuitively, the former curling a cross high into the roof of the net – and Mbeumo scored the third when he finished off the penalty kick after Ugochukwu’s clumsy foul on Van den Berg. .
There was no way back after that, but things got worse for the stricken Saints in second-half stoppage time.
Lewis Potter took advantage of Harwood-Bellis’ sudden slide to make it four after Mbeumu’s pass and Wesa added the brilliance inside two minutes, notching his 10th goal of the season after Yuki Sugawara headed the ball straight into his path.
