Hamza Igamani and late goals from substitutes Leon Balogun and Cyril Desires gave Rangers a comfortable 3-0 win to extend Aberdeen’s winless run to 12 matches.
Philippe Clement’s side started aiming to maintain their strong form at Ibrox, and Igamane put them ahead early.
Despite having the majority of the chances, they did not add to the scoring until stoppage time when Balogun and Desers put the result beyond doubt.
The Dons, who brought in new signings Alfie Dorrington and Alexander Jensen for the first time, offered little as their poor league form continued.
Rangers are now 13 points behind Celtic at the top of the Premier League.
Dominant Rangers deal another blow to Dons
The atmosphere has returned to normal again after a group of disgruntled fans walked out of the club’s 3-1 home win over St Johnstone on Sunday in protest at the board and new chief executive Patrick Stewart’s public support for their manager.
Ijamani was supposed to score in the eighth minute when he crossed the ball from Vaclav Cerny, but his left-footed shot evaded the far post after going past goalkeeper Ross Doohan.
However, moments later, after defender Sivert Nielsen allowed the Dons keeper to throw the ball under his feet, Cerny pounced to cut the ball back to midfielder Mohamed Diomandi and when his shot bounced back to an unmarked Ighamane, he calmly slotted the ball over. From 12 yards to score his seventh goal in six matches.
In the 29th minute, after Diomandy lost the ball inside the center circle, quick-thinking Aberdeen midfielder Leighton Clarkson headed towards goal and Rangers goalkeeper Liam Kelly tipped the ball back under the crossbar before slotting home.
At the other end, Doohan was quick to frustrate Danilo after he easily passed to Brazilian striker Ianis Hagi.
The first half ended with the visiting goalkeeper making a superb save from Igamani’s powerful long-distance effort before Christers Taubers’ header was denied by Kelly in a rare Dons attack.
Nadeem Bajrami replaced Danilo at the start of the second half and after raising more anti-ball banners in the 55th minute – symbolizing Rangers’ 55th and final title win of 2021 – Hagi headed over the bar with a 25-yard drive.
Bajrami’s shot just evaded Doohan’s left post as the hosts took control of the game.
Aberdeen did not make any progress in the second half.
Another chance never came for Rangers as Cerny fired a left-footed shot at Doohan when he should have tried an effort earlier with his right.
There was another injury concern for Clement when centre-back Robin Propper went off injured in the 75th minute to be replaced by Balogun.
The visitors felt they could take something out of the game and began to push forward in the closing stages as nerves began to creep through the stands.
Balogun took a corner kick from Cerny that hit the post five minutes before the end of the match, but in the third minute out of seven additional minutes, he rose to convert a cross from Clinton Nsiala.
Dessers, who came on for Igamane and has been linked with a move from the club, finished off the match by curling a shot past Doohan from long range to seal the win.
Clement praises ‘total dominance’
Rangers boss Philip Clement He said Sky Sports:
“Connecting with the fans at the end [was the most pleasing thing].
“It was almost complete control of the match. This is what we have been working for for months. We did it in moments but not enough.
“I’m really proud of Clinton Nsiala for all the work he has done in recent months with the reserve team and in training.
“We could have scored more, we had enough chances. We were not effective enough, we hit the crossbar and the post as well.
“We knew we had to kill the opponent, otherwise they could score from one chance. But we kept pressing.”
Thielen sees team ‘fighting’
Aberdeen president Jimmy Thelen He said Sky Sports:
“We are in a challenging time. We have to raise the standards of our game.
“We have some injuries, new players have arrived, and some players have not been able to rest.
“It’s a combination of everything. It’s important to look forward to it.” [the cup game at Elgin]Train well.
“I can still see a team fighting and running for each other. They are trying in a challenging time to give everything in the match.”
