Marcus Smith: England fly-half signs long-term contract at Harlequins | Rugby Union News happymamay

Marcus Smith has signed a new long-term contract that will keep him at Harlequins until at least 2028.

The 25-year-old England international has committed his future to Quins, the club who has overseen his development from an academy talent to one of the best players in the world in his position.

Smith became the second-youngest player in Premier League history to make his debut when he started for his boyhood club against London Irish in September 2017, aged just 18 years and 200 days.

He made 166 appearances for Queens, scoring 35 tries and 1,505 points, and was instrumental in Gallagher’s side winning the 2020/21 Premier League title, finishing the season as the league’s top scorer.

“I’m very excited to sign a new contract with Harlequins,” Smith said. “I love the club, it has given me and my family so much over the years and I am looking forward to the future here.

“Every time I come to the training ground, I get excited about the future of the club because I can see the level of talent we have in the building. We’ve always been proud of our home-grown talent, and I think everyone is too.” We’ll see more of that in the coming seasons.

“Every time I play at The Stoop, I feel the love and support of the fans not only for myself, but for the team as well – I think they provide the best support this league has to offer. On a personal and collective level, we all do.” Grateful for them.

Smith underscored his world-class credentials with four electric performances in England’s autumn Nations Series campaign

“I came from the academy and I’m still playing with a lot of my best teammates, and I hope we can achieve more of our dreams together.”

Smith has won 39 caps and scored 284 points representing England, and in 2021, he was called up for the British and Irish Lions’ tour of South Africa.

He underscored his world class credentials during England’s indifferent Autumn Nations Series campaign with excellent performances against New Zealand, Australia, South Africa and Japan.

Along with Scotland’s Finn Russell, he is in contention for a starting tenth role on the Lions’ tour of Australia in 2025.
