The Minnesota Vikings’ playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams is still scheduled to be played at SoFi Stadium in California, but there is a contingency plan in place due to multiple ongoing wildfires around Los Angeles.
If the backup plan has to go ahead, Monday night’s game will be played at the Arizona Cardinals’ home stadium, State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
There are at least five wildfires burning in Los Angeles, fueled by strong winds of up to 100 mph, killing five people and asking 130,000 people to evacuate their homes.
“The NFL’s priority is the safety of the Los Angeles community,” a statement from the NFL said.
“We are grateful for the tireless efforts of our first responders. Our thoughts are with Los Angeles and all those affected by the fires.
“We continue to prepare to play the Vikings-Rams game as scheduled Monday night at SoFi Stadium. As with all games, there are contingency plans in place should a change of location need to be made. In this case, the game will be played on Monday.” Night at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, if necessary.
“We will continue to monitor developments in the area closely and will remain in contact with government officials, both clubs and the AFL.”
The Rams and Los Angeles Chargers are practicing in areas not at risk for wildfires but both teams are monitoring air quality and the potential impact on their practices.
The Chargers changed their practice schedule Wednesday to limit the time their players spend outdoors in coastal El Segundo, while the Rams don’t resume practice until Thursday.
The Chargers will be on the road Saturday against the Houston Texans in the Wild Card Round.
The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Wednesday that the organization will provide $200,000 (£162,840) in targeted funding to help those affected by the fires.
