Ange Postecoglou criticized his Tottenham team after their derby defeat to Arsenal, describing the team’s performance and recent form as “unacceptable”.
Postecoglou’s side barely threatened in the 2-1 defeat, as Pedro Porro’s shot rebounded off the post from an impossible angle in stoppage time, the closest they came to a reply in the second half when they should have been chasing the game.
Tottenham remain in 13th place with just one league win – against 20th-placed Southampton – since beating Manchester City in November, while Arsenal are eyeing the title. Postecoglou’s team is only eight points away from the relegation zone.
In their next match, they will face Everton, who are themselves trying to avoid the relegation battle, on Sunday, live Sky Sports.
When asked about his opinion of the performance, Postecoglou said: “It was not good enough, especially in the first half, which was very negative. We allowed Arsenal to dominate. I was disappointed with us with the ball and without it, which allowed them to dictate the ball.” The rhythm is not good enough.
“This is not who we are. This is not how I prepared the team to play. Sitting back and letting Arsenal play was not good enough.
“There is no magic cure. We need to work hard and battle it out on Sunday and improve our fortunes and our season. There are always reasons for things to happen but the truth is that our results and level in the league have not been good enough.” This needs to change.
“We didn’t play anywhere close to who I want us to be. We’re an aggressive team with and without the ball – we showed that against Liverpool but tonight we were too passive. This is unacceptable. The second half was bad.” A little better but it wasn’t enough.
“This cannot be accepted by anyone at the club, losing so many games in one league season is not right. Yes we are asking for big jobs but I hope 18-year-old players [Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall] They are hurting like everyone else in terms of not being able to make it on the big day.”
Arteta praises ‘intense’ performance.
Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta speaks to TNT:
“The players were fantastic. We played 120 minutes less than 72 hours ago, but the way we presented was exceptional.
“We made it difficult for ourselves, but the attitude was great. The aim and intensity was really good.
“We play every three days, so it’s just a foundation, and it’s about the next day now. We won today, great, but now it’s about Aston Villa. My confidence comes from what I see every day, not just the results. Sometimes in football you don’t get what you get.” You deserve it.
“We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. What we can control is performance, and today they did it again.”
Regarding the possibility of reinforcements in January, Arteta added: “Yes, definitely. We lost two great players with Gabi [Jesus] And Bukayo [Saka]. We will try, we are actively looking. We have lost very important players. We will try but let’s see what we can get.”
