Mario Lemina has been stripped of the Wolves captaincy.
Lemina clashed with West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen following Wolves’ 2-1 defeat on Monday and then proceeded to push his team-mates as they tried to calm down and then confront Wolves assistant coach Shaun Derry.
Nelson Semedo takes his place as Wolves captain, with Wolves boss Gary O’Neill confirming that the incident against West Ham has led to a conversation about the captaincy.
“Mario is fine,” O’Neill said. “It was a conversation, nothing more than that. The most important thing to come out of it is that we need to get the best out of everyone.
“Of course, that night sparked a conversation, but it was an important conversation that had to be had.
“Mario and I have a good understanding now of how we move forward and what it looks like. We dealt with it earlier in the week, so the focus from that moment on was firmly on Ipswich.
“These things, sometimes they can be hard to deal with, and sometimes you can come out of them in a good place, and I feel like we did that.
“I have great respect for Mario and what he will still be able to do for us. When we get the best out of him on the pitch, his level is so high that he will still play a big role for us.” .
He added: “He will still be around that group of senior players who lead the team, but at this moment we feel it is better for Nelson to lead the group.”
Lemina’s apology: We will fight to overcome this situation
The day after the match, Lemina took to social media to apologize for his actions. books:
“I write this letter too late and I really want to apologize to all the people who love this club and love football.
“I never wanted this to happen in reality. I have always been a fair player, even in defeat.
“If something is said, make sure the truth comes out.
“I shook this player’s hand, as I always do, and I was grabbed by the shirt and thrown to the ground. I was just responding to a situation that I did not cause at all.
“I love my team, the staff, and all the people who make up this club.
“We will all fight harder to get through this situation. Sean [Derry] You already know. We will fight again and again.”
