Ruben Amorim described his Manchester United team as “probably the worst team in the history of Manchester United”.
Brighton recorded a 3-1 win at Old Trafford on Sunday to keep United mired in the bottom half of the Premier League as Amorim’s hot start to his tenure at the club continues.
“In 10 Premier League matches, we won two,” Amorim said.
“Imagine what this is for Manchester United fans. Imagine what this is for me. So we get a new manager who loses more than the previous one. I have full knowledge of that.
“Like I said, I won’t change no matter what. I know we can succeed, but we need to survive this moment. Because I’m not naive and I know we need to survive now.
“We are probably the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know you want the headlines, but I say that because we have to acknowledge that and change that. Here are your headlines.”
United are currently ranked 13th in the Premier League. Bruno Fernandes’ penalty was United’s only shot on target during their loss to Brighton.
“I don’t really understand it at the moment,” the United captain said. “We talk all the time about how difficult it is to play at Old Trafford. How can Manchester United have difficulties playing at home with the atmosphere we have, the great stadium and everything?”
“The players and fans will suffer, but it will bring results.”
In his post-match interview with Sky SportsAmorim stressed his intention not to change his playing style at Manchester United, despite concerns about his 3-4-3 formation.
But when asked if things would continue like this for a while until the Portuguese could put a mark on his team, Amorim replied: “That’s clear. For me, that’s clear. Because I’m not going to change the way.” I see the game and I’m very clear on that.
He added: “The players will suffer, I’m sorry, the fans will suffer. I have one way of doing things, and I know it will continue.” [bring] results. But we have to suffer through these moments. “I think it’s clear to everyone what we’re going to do.”
How bad was United’s performance against Brighton?
Adam Butt from Sky Sports at Old Trafford: “United were very poor again. They saved it in the second half against Southampton, and this time Brighton deserved to take the game away from them. It will be choppy. This was another downturn,” Amorim warned.
Jamie O’Hara on Sky Sports News: “Very big problems for Manchester United. I’m not sure about Amorim with the 3-4-3. They were miles away from them. It was a really bad performance. They didn’t offer anything.”
