Ukrainian President Folodimir Zelinski said that a Russian drone attack had hit the radiation shelter on the damaged reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Energy Station.
He added that the strike during the night hit the refuge of the fourth energy unit of the factory, which caused a fire that has been extinguished since then.
As of Friday morning, the levels of radiation in the factory did not increase.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said that fire and vehicle safety staff responded within minutes of an explosion overnight. The agency added any unnoticed injuries.
The International Atomic Energy Agency, which monitors nuclear safety in the world, said that the levels of radiation inside and outside Chernobyl are still normal and stable.
The agency is still a “great alert” after the accident, as Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said that there is no “field of contentment.”
Chernobyl is the site of the worst nuclear accident in the world – a catastrophic explosion that sent a column of radioactive materials into the air in 1986, which led to a public health emergency throughout Europe.
Zelensky posted shots on X showing that it shows damage to the giant shield, made of concrete and steel, which covers the remnants of the reactor that lost its roof in the explosion.
The shield is designed to prevent further leakage of radioactive materials during the next century. It is 275 million (900 feet) and is 108 meters long (354 feet) and costs 1.6 billion dollars (1.3 billion pounds) for construction.
