The country’s interior minister said that Austria was killed by a 14 -year -old boy and five others were wounded as an Islamic attack.
The attack took place on Saturday in Villach, a town near the border with Italy and Slovenia.
A 23 -year -old Syrian asylum seeker was held at the scene.
Interior Minister Gerhard Karener said the attack was linked to the Islamic State Group and the suspect appears to have been extremely overlooked online “during a very short period of time.”
The authorities previously said he had a temporary residence permit and was waiting for a decision on asylum.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Carner said that this was “an Islamic attack with links by the attacker who, according to investigations so far, was clear that he was online extremist, online, within a very short period of time.
“So those who are responsible, the police, the authorities, must extract the necessary conclusions of this.”
The attack took place at about 16:00 local time (15:00 GMT) near the city’s main square.
Two of the five injured people were in serious condition from Saturday evening.
The police said the delivery worker, a Syrian man, was driving his car to the attacker, helped prevent more injuries.
The attack comes amid a national discussion on the laws of asylum and elections last year.
The party failed to form an alliance government, leaving Austrian President Alexander van der Bellin, who weighs whether he would contact sudden elections, form a minority government, invite other parties or a group of experts to try to form a administration.
Herbert Kiel, head of the Freedom Party, seized the Villach attack, saying on Saturday that Austria needs a “strict campaign to asylum.”
