A Spanish city honored two Senegalese immigrants for their hero in an attempt to save a gay man who was beaten to death by gay mob.
Abrahama Diak and Magout Nadia were granted the “adopted sons of the city” in Corunia on Monday at an official ceremony that recognizes their actions.
The men were the only ones to intervene in July 2021, when a group of men put Samuel Louise and kicked it and shook outside a nightclub in the northwestern city.
The 24-year-old died of his wounds in the hospital-the event that sparked national anger and condemnation.
On Monday, at an official ceremony in the city council hall, Mayor Inis Rey described the actions of migrants as a “pure championship”.
Those nightmare shots showed others watching, some photography on mobile phones, and the two are the only ones who intervened.
The mayor said, “Two uncomfortable immigrants are the only ones who physically risk the victim of a thirsty bundle that leaves a lot of food to think and a series of lessons.”
Another advisor, Rosalia Lopez, said, “Thank you for your example of risking everything, even though you lose a lot.” On Instagram in the post sharing videos for the ceremony.
Mr. Diak and Mr. Nadia lived in the city without papers at that time and doing irregular work, which exposes them to the risk of detention and deportation if they communicated with the authorities.
But both men said on Monday that they were just doing what they thought was the right thing to try to stop violence. In front of a crowd of those present in the Hall of the Council on Monday, they were handed over to the mayors, who grants them the status of “Coruña adopted” sons.
“We are not heroes, we have done what we had to do,” said Mr. Nadia, according to a report to AFP.
Mr. Diak said: “I was born in a family that does not have much … but they gave me many more valuable things than money. They gave me respect, education, and above all, values,” said Mr. Diak.
The Spanish media reported that the two were decisive witnesses in the trial of Mr. Louise’s killers last November.
The jury found four guilty men, and ordered the court between 10 and 24 years. The court found that the main suspect – who was given a 24 -year prison sentence – shouted homosexuals during the attack.
