Anthony Gordon says speculation over his future has affected his performances but insists he loves Newcastle United and desperately wants to win a title with them.
Newcastle suffered a disappointing 4-2 loss to Brentford last weekend, just days after Gordon scored in a thrilling 3-3 win at home to Premier League leaders Liverpool.
The former Everton striker celebrated his goal by making talking gestures with his hands – and speaking as he met Newcastle fans to collect the Disabled Supporters’ Player of the Year award, and Gordon suggested talk of a move to the Reds last summer was behind the goal celebration.
“I loved the game, and I didn’t need any more motivation for that game,” Gordon said. Sky Sports News.
“It was a celebration because I’ve heard a lot of talk this year about my future, where I’m going, where I want to go without anyone really asking me.
“Just leave me to play football, I just want to be happy, play football. I like it here, I’ve said it many times, I think with speculation, people assume it’s all true when you never hear. He once told me I’m not… I’m happy in this place, I love everyone here, and I love playing football here.
“It took me away from enjoying my football this year, and I think that’s where the inconsistencies (in performance) come from, because I got stuck in that a little bit,” Gordon added.
“But I just want to play football, especially for Newcastle.”
Gordon is not the only Newcastle player said to have attracted interest, with Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak said to be among the players said to have been impressed by other clubs.
“I’m only 23,” Gordon said. “All I heard was, ‘When is he leaving?’ Who said I would ever leave?
“I’m very happy here, I love this place, I love playing football here and I think Bruno and Alex are thinking the same thing.
“But we’re all young, we’re all human, so if people talk about it, it kind of questions our character. It’s hard.”
Gordon said there was nothing close to winning the title with Newcastle United.
“Everyone (on the team) is in the same boat,” he said.
“If we can win a title for this club, it would mean the absolute world. Obviously the league means a lot to us because all our players want to play in Europe, we want to play at that high level.”
“But for me, since I joined – and it will probably always be the case until that happens – the main priority for me is to win the title.”
