Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says he has sympathy but not any sympathy for Arsenal’s injury woes ahead of Wednesday’s north London derby.
Already without key players including Bukayo Saka and Ben White, Arsenal now have Gabriel Jesus on the sidelines as well after the Brazilian forward suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during the FA Cup defeat to Manchester United last Sunday.
Postecoglou’s side have endured a horror run with injuries and head to the Emirates with just one win in their last seven Premier League matches, a run that left them 12th in the table at the start of the midweek round of fixtures.
“I don’t know, how much sympathy do they all have for me? I’m not really sure…” Postecoglou said when asked if he had any sympathy for Mikel Arteta in the wake of news of Jesus’ injury.
“I definitely feel sympathy, maybe that’s a better word.
“I understand how challenging it is for any team, regardless of their size or quality.”
Since joining Tottenham from Celtic in the summer of 2023, Postecoglou has lost two and drawn one of the three north London derbies he has played in.
He described Wednesday’s match as “as big as it was before”, admitted that his team needed to get back to winning ways in the league quickly, and said there would be “no better place to start” than the Emirates Stadium.
“You realize that it is a match in itself, because it means a lot to our fans and our club,” Postecoglou said.
“So that’s the focus and that’s what we have to focus on in terms of wanting to give our best performance on the day so that we can delight our fans.
“It’s like being in Glasgow, you are very aware and know what it means and the positive and negative ramifications.
“I played in the first game. This year is as big as ever, especially for us and our season. We have to start winning games in the league and there is no better place to start.”
Richarlison returns but Werner is out
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Postecoglou expressed hope that Tottenham could overcome the worst of their injury problems by saying “Hopefully there will be some light at the end of the tunnel for us.”
They will have Richarlison Available for Wednesday’s match for the first time since suffering a muscle injury during the 4-1 win Aston Villa In November, though Timo Werner He will be absent due to a hamstring injury.
“The only person who was injured [against Tamworth in the FA Cup] It was Timo. Postecoglou revealed that he suffered a hamstring injury.
“Everyone except the ones in pain pulled out well. As far as what’s coming, Richie is available.”
