Australian Open: Alfie Hewett and Gordon Reid win sixth straight men’s wheelchair doubles title | Tennis News happymamay

Alfie Hewitt and Gordon Reid win their sixth consecutive men’s wheelchair doubles title at the Australian Open.

The British pair have now claimed 17 of the last 20 Grand Slam titles in the discipline and 22 titles together overall, while also claiming their first Paralympic gold medal together last summer.

The team won in straight sets in the final in Melbourne, defeating Spaniard Daniel Caversace and Frenchman Stephane Houdet 6-2, 6-4.

“I think the main thing is to never be comfortable with where we are and never be happy with our level and performance and always try to improve,” Reid said.

“No matter what title we win or what number it is, we always go back and review it and see where we can improve and get better.”

Hewitt will try to achieve double success on Saturday when he faces his great rival Tokito Oda in the singles final.

Lapthorne wins eighth straight doubles title in Melbourne

Andy Lapthorne won his eighth Australian Open title in the wheelchair quadruple doubles competition, sharing with Dutchman Sam Schroeder a 6-1, 6-4 victory over the first seeds, Niels Fink and Jay Sasson.

Lapthorne is a big West Ham fan and has been encouraged by the club’s support. He hopes to be home in time to see them take on Aston Villa on Sunday, which will be broadcast live Sky Sports.

“I think my flight will be at 11pm tomorrow. If I’m not late, I’ll get straight into the car and head to Villa Park,” he said.

“If not, hopefully I can have a week off and maybe go to the training ground and show off the trophy and meet some of the boys. “I got a few messages from Vladimir Coufal last night, which was really nice.

“He WhatsApped me saying he’s watching us and good luck and stuff like that. They’ve been great to me.

“A couple of guys from the media team have sent me a message saying good luck and saying they are following the game. It’s really good to have the support of the club’s fans and people within the club. It keeps me going.”

But 15-year-old British Hannah Klugman wasted the girls’ doubles title after losing to American twins Anika and Kristina Bennikova 6-4, 6-2, along with Australian Emerson Jones in the final.
