The Polish President said that gas flows from Russia to Western Europe should never be restored, even if Russia and Ukraine reach a peace agreement.
AndrĂ© Doda told the BBC that the gas pipelines, Nord Stream, which has not been used since 2022, “must be dismantled.”
He said that this means that the likes of Germany will not tend to restore Russian supplies to it Enhancing its faltering economy.
He added: “I can only hope that European leaders will learn lessons from the Russian aggression on Ukraine, and to push for a decision not to resume pumping gas through this pipeline.”
The Polish President, who was speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, insisted that economic sanctions imposed on Russia are successful and European countries must resist the pressure of companies to restore trade relations.
The gas pipelines, Nord Stream, were built by the Russian giant gas company Gazprom, and extends between Russia and northern Germany.
Nord Stream 1 was closed in 2022 and Nord Stream 2 was never used, after the invasion of Ukraine. Both were affected by the explosions in 2022.
Gas prices have risen in Europe after the closure, and in recent months, politicians from the Right -wing alternative party have suggested that the gas pipelines Nord Stream will resume their operations.
Germany is scheduled to hold federal elections at the end of February.
“I think Nord Stream pipelines should be dismantled,” Doda said. “This pipeline poses a very big threat to Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia as well as other countries in Central Europe.”
He added: “It is a threat from the energy point of view, and from a military point of view, but it also represents a major economic threat because it means Russia’s dominance of Europe in the economic sense.”
Regarding the possibility of an agreement between Ukraine and Russia now after US President Donald Trump took office, Doda insisted that peace talks cannot be held without the participation of Ukraine.
“I say this as President of the Republic of Poland and as a length of Ukraine and also as head of a country that has gone through very difficult historical experiences,” he said.
“I am talking here and referring to World War II and to Yalta, where we were not involved in those talks, where certain agreements were reached outside our heads and then we found ourselves behind the iron curtain, where we were, for almost 50 years, they were part of the Soviet influence.” .
Trump had said earlier that he would negotiate a settlement of a large -scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022 within 24 hours, and has since admitted that it might take some time.
Doda said that allowing Russia to keep the lands it occupied in Ukraine would be “a violation of international law.”
President Vladimir Putin said he was ready to negotiate the end of the war, which started for the first time in 2014 when Russia included the Crimea, but Ukraine must accept the reality of Russian regional gains, which are currently about 20 % of its territory.
Putin also refuses to accept Ukraine’s accession to NATO, the military alliance of Western countries.
“The international community cannot agree, and it is unacceptable that Russia seizes certain areas in Ukraine and keeps it by force. This is unacceptable,” Doda said.
“We should not allow Russia to win this war.”
Doda said that Trump “understands the region” and that American intervention would be essential.
“President Donald Trump as a leader of the strongest country in NATO, as a leader of the strongest economy, will have great importance.” Doda said.
He added, “I am waiting for the first steps that Donald Trump will take.”
