Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer said that military planning to protect the potential ceasefire in Ukraine is moved to a “operational stage” after a virtual meeting with 29 other world leaders.
Sir Kerr said that the military leaders will meet on Thursday in the United Kingdom “to develop strong and strong plans to swing behind a peace deal and guarantee the future security of Ukraine.”
The meeting follows Ukraine that agrees to a 30 -day ceasefire after talks with the United States. Russian President Vladimir Putin said he agreed with this idea, but he set a number of pre -conditions for peace.
“There is an active pressure, not just talks,” said Ukraine president Voludmir Zelinski, who joined a meeting on Saturday.
“The world must understand that Russia is the only obstacle that prevents peace,” he said.
“The peace path should start without restriction or condition. If Russia does not want it, strong pressure must be applied until it does so. Moscow understands one language,” Zelinski added.
He urged European countries to produce their weapons as soon as possible and speak with the United States and its President Donald Trump to reach a deal more quickly through “full sanctions, strong pressure and forcing Russia to make peace.”
In a letter after the video invitation, Mr. Kiir said, “The world needs procedures … not words and empty circumstances.”
In a statement, he said that “reducing the Kremlin and delaying” about the suggestion of the ceasefire and its ongoing attacks on Ukraine “is completely inconsistent with President Putin’s declared desire for peace.”
On Saturday, the leaders agreed that if Putin refuses to “a immediate and unconditional shooting”, they will need to “increase pressure … to persuade him to come to the negotiating table.”
“To provide this, we will accelerate our military support, we strive our sanctions on Russia’s revenues, and continue to explore all legal ways to ensure that Russia pushes the damage it caused to Ukraine,” the statement said.
Putin said on Thursday that he supported the idea of a ceasefire, but added, “There are accurate differences” and asking a list of questions about the details, including whether the ceasefire would allow Ukraine to re -arrays and who will establish it.
Among the participants in the NATO call, European Union, and about twenty European countries, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Sir Kerr said that the military presidents will meet this week to move forward in “practical plans” how to support their armies on Ukraine.
“We will build the private defenses of Ukraine and the armed forces, and we will be ready to publish as a alliance for those who want” in the event of a peace agreement, to help secure Ukraine on the ground, at sea, and in the sky. “
Sir Kiir presented the idea of a “alliance from those who wish” to defend the ceasefire earlier this month, and said on Saturday that the coalition had grown and included support from Japan and others.
The Prime Minister has previously said that he was “ready and borrowed” to put the UK forces in Ukraine to help ensure its security as part of a peace agreement. He called on other European countries to adhere to a tangible security guarantee, and said that there was a need for “behind” the United States.
At a press conference after the summit, Zelensky said that a form of “shoes on the ground” was needed after the ceasefire, although he admitted that some were “skeptical.”
Finnish President Alexander Stop told the BBC on Sunday with Laura Quinzburg after the summit that he was “very early” to talk about putting forces on the ground as part of any security guarantee.
Stop said that Finland was ready to be part of the efforts made to defend a peace agreement, but he said: “It is too early to talk about shoes on the ground because we do not deal with the shooting, we do not have a peace process. Once we have a clear plan, we start to make obligations.”
He said there was “anywhere from scratch to 50 different ways they could help, the shoes on the ground are only one way.”
Thousands of people have been killed since Russia launched a large -scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
