US to have seat at talks on islands’ future, says Mauritian PM happymamay

Prime Minister Moreteh said that the United States will attend talks about the future of the Shaghus Islands, which was the subject of a controversial deal between Mauritius and the United Kingdom.

Last October, the United Kingdom announced that it will hand over the sovereignty of the islands, officially known as the British Indian Ocean region, to Mauritius, but will maintain a 99 -year lease on the military base in the United Kingdom and the United States on the largest island, Diego Garcia.

The deal was reached with former Maurishia leader Bravind Goguouth, but Navin Ramgolam, his alternative, was very important.

The progress was also delayed to allow officials from President Donald Trump to discuss the details of the deal.

The agreement concluded in the month of October – in which the Biden Greenlit Administration – included lease payments in the United Kingdom to MAURITIUS for the Military Base in the United Kingdom and the United States.

However, shortly after the deal was concluded, Mauritius was elected new prime minister, Navin Ramgolam, who wanted to reopen negotiations.

In a statement on Instagram on ThursdayPrime Minister Ramgolam’s office said that “a representative from the new administration in the United States of America was present in negotiations to increase the process of the process.”

Ramgolam also said that this showed that he was open and ready to “find a common ground”, adding that he was confident that there would be a “positive solution.”

It was quoted in the UK newspaper, the White House, as saying that the White House asked to have a person in the talks.

Earlier this month, Ramgoolm MAURITIAN said that the previous deal had been badly negotiated by the man who replaced him, describing it as a “sale”.

He said that the United Kingdom’s payments agreed to Mauritius were not evidence of inflation and should include a larger amount.

It also objected to a item of the United Kingdom to expand the unilateral lease contract on Diego Garcia for another 40 years.

It is not clear what the American position on the deal exactly, but last year, before being in office, Foreign Minister Marco Rubio said it posed a “serious threat”, on the pretext that it gives the islands to a country in line with China. Mauritius has a trade agreement with China.

The UK took control of the Shaghus Islands, from its then UNICION, in 1965 and continued to evacuate its inhabitants of more than 1,000 people to make way for the Diego Garcia base.

Mauritius, who beat independence from the United Kingdom in 1968, maintained that its islands, and the highest United Nations court, had ruled, in an advisory opinion, that the region’s administration in the United Kingdom is “illegal”.

The inhabitants of Shaghus – some of them are in Mauritius and Syshyll, but others who live in the United Kingdom – do not speak with one voice on the fate of their homeland.

Some criticized the deal, saying they were not consulted in negotiations.
