Caroline Dubois made full lightweight world champion after Katie Taylor vacates WBC belt | Boxing News happymamay

Caroline Dubois has been promoted to WBC lightweight champion after Katie Taylor vacated the belt.

Dubois became interim champion with a unanimous decision win over Mayra Moneo in August and has since called for a title match with Taylor.

But the Irish legend’s decision to vacate means Dubois inherits the belt, and she will make her first defense on January 11 – her 24th birthday – against former Canadian world title challenger Jessica Kamara in Sheffield, live. Sky Sports.

Dubois was presented with the belt by World Boxing Council president Mauricio Sulaiman at the governing body’s annual conference in Hamburg on Wednesday.

“It is a great honor to be promoted to WBC world champion and to have the belt presented to me by WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman,” Dubois said.

“It has always been my dream to become a world champion and this is just the beginning of the journey for me. I am looking forward to defending my WBC world title on January 11 in Sheffield.”

Since turning professional after competing in the Tokyo Olympics, Dubois has compiled a 10-0 professional record with five wins by knockout.

The Londoner, who is the sister of world heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, has not had any problems so far in the professional ranks, but former world title challenger Kamara could present one of her toughest tests yet.

Ben Shalom, Dubois’ promoter, said: “We would like to thank WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and the Board of Governors for promoting Caroline.

“The WBC lightweight title is active again and in Caroline, the WBC has a champion who can reign for many years to come.

“We are only beginning to see her true potential. We believe Caroline will become the future face of women’s boxing.”

The massive heavyweight rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury will be broadcast on Saturday 21 December on Sky Sports Box Office. Book now!
