The Swedish government announced plans to tighten arms laws, days after the worst mass shooting in the country’s history.
The police said that the gunman, who killed 10 people and himself at an adult education center in Orbro on Tuesday, had four law -owned rifles – three of which were found in school.
The center -right coalition in Sweden said it would seek to increase the examination of weapons licenses and restrict access to semi -automatic weapons.
The government said: “There are certain types of weapons that are so dangerous that they should only be possessed for civil purposes as an exception.”
“We have to guarantee that only the right people have weapons in Sweden,” Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said, on a visit to Latvia, to reporters.
Swedish Democrats have said it is consistent with proposals for amending the law, including greater restrictions on access to semi -automatic weapons.
“The work of horrific violence in Orbro raises many major questions about weapons legislation,” the party said in a statement.
The AR-15, a certain pattern of a strong almost automatic rifle and can carry large magazines, has been distinguished by the government as an example of the weapons that can be restricted.
The police did not diminish exactly the weapons used in the attack, but the AR-15 was used in many mass fire operations in the United States.
They confirmed that several long rifles were found at the Orebro attack site, along with 10 empty magazines.
Under the current Swedish arms laws, anyone who is over 18 years old who has no criminal record can apply for a permit to obtain a rifle, gun, or almost automatic rifle.
They should justify the police why they need a weapon. People over the age of 20 can apply for a special distribution to have a fully automatic weapon.
About 580,000 Swedish have a weapons license from the population about 10.5 million, according to numbers from the Swedish broadcaster SVT.
A Swiss study in 2017 found that there are about 2.3 million rifles kept by civilians in Sweden. This is about 23 rifles per 100 people, compared to 29 in Norway and 120 per 100 in the United States.
For a fishing license in Sweden, a theory and practical test are required. About 280,000 Swedish have one.
The police have not yet recognized the victims of the attack in Orbro, or declared the motivation behind the attack, but said they were hoping to conclude the identification process and issue a announcement on Friday.
Among the dead, according to family members and society, was the Syrians who fled the war there as refugees, as well as one Bosnians.
The Swedish police are usually cautious about naming the suspects during the investigation, but the lack of official information has contributed to the feeling of fear and uncertainty among migrant societies in Orbro during the past few days.
“We need more information,” said Nour Afram, 36, who was inside the Rispergska School when the attack.
“We don’t know why he did so, why did you target this school? Was it sick or was it something else?” She said.
Afram was waiting for the chapter to go when I heard people screaming at the shooter.
“We started running and then heard gunshots,” she said. “One at the beginning, then Tak Tak Tak – maybe ten shots. I was very afraid of felt my heart stopped in my chest.”
Sweden has a relatively high level of arms ownership and arms crime, according to European standards, although most weapons are legally owned and used to hunt.
The crime of weapons is mostly associated with gangs, which also took the use of bombs to target each other.
The crime of weapons that are not related to gangs is less common, and on Tuesday’s attack on school shootings and the worst group shooting. A total of four people were killed in separate school stab wounds in 2015 and 2022.
