UK suspension of aid over DR Congo war is ‘punitive’ happymamay

The authorities in the East Africa said that the UK decision to suspend some aid to Rwanda is “punitive”.

In a statement, the United Kingdom said it was against Rwanda’s support for M23, a rebel group that seized the areas of the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo in a deadly uprising.

Rwanda used to deprive her of the support of the M23, but recently it adopted a more defensive line, saying that the fighting near the border between Dr. Kongo and Rwanda posed a threat to his security.

More than 7,000 people have died of hundreds of thousands of their homes since the escalating of the conflict in January, says the government of Dr. Kongo.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, the UK said that the humanitarian situation in the Congo was “embarrassed” and that he would stop bilateral assistance to Rwanda, “except for support for the poorest and most vulnerable.”

Earlier this month, British Foreign Secretary David Lami said that Rwanda is receiving about 32 million pounds (40 million dollars) of bilateral aid from the United Kingdom every year.

In addition to suspending aid, the UK will impose other measures, such as looking at potential sanctions and suspending “assistance in future defense training” on Rwanda, the statement said.

These measures will continue until “great progress” will be made in stopping hostilities and withdrawing Rwandan military personnel from Dr. Kongo.

United Nations experts previously estimated that between 3000 and 4000 of the Rwandan forces in the eastern Congo.

“The punitive measures” announced by the UK government “said in response to the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo – where the United Kingdom has now chosen aside – unfortunate.”

“The measures do nothing to help the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and do not contribute to achieving a sustainable political solution to the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.”

The UK had previously had good relations with Rwanda. In 2022, the two countries signed a deal in millions of pounds, where some asylum seekers who arrive in British territory will be deported to Rwanda.

The deal faced legal challenges and was canceled last year after a change in the UK government.

The government of Dr. Congo is a campaign for international powers to suspend aid and impose sanctions on Rwanda.

Last week, the US Treasury said it imposed sanctions on the Minister of State in Rwanda for regional integration, James Caparibi.

The United States has accused Kaparibi, the former army commander, of being a central support for Rwanda for M23.

The US Treasury said that a M23 spokesman, was approved, and they were approved by Lawrence Canuka, a M23 spokesman, in addition to two companies controlling them in France and the United Kingdom.

In response to the US step, the Foreign Ministry in Rwanda said the sanctions are “unjustified.”

M23 says he is fighting to achieve it Better rights for TutsiA group of ethnic minorities in Dr. Congo, and to advance the system to a failed state.

The rebels seized the two largest cities of Dr. Goma and Bocavo.
