Chris Pellam Smith will target Badou Jack and the WBC cruiserweight title in his bid to become world champion again.
In November, Gilberto Ramirez outlasted Britain’s Billam Smith, winning a narrow decision to unify the WBO and WBA titles.
But the former champion has recovered from that brutal defeat and is seeking the WBC belt, which is now held by Badou Jack after his restoration as champion.
“I’m back training and I’m feeling good. I’m feeling really energized and motivated,” Belam-Smith said. Sky Sports.
“I like fighting Badou Jack. I think I relate to it [Ryan] Rosicki [the mandatory challenger]. I would love that fight.”
Billam-Smith is ranked No. 4 by the WBC and will be in the frame for an eventual title shot of his own.
He has faith that he can come back as a better fighter. “He was great,” Belam Smith said of Ramirez.
“He’s a very special fighter. It’s been a really good experience for me to share the ring with him and learn and build from it. All I can do is go far and get better.”
Although he added: “It was a tough loss because I was beaten by the better man.”
Massie calls for a fight against CBS.
Another British cruiserweight who has come back from a tough loss at world level is Jack Massey. The impressive IBF champion Jay Opetaia stopped Massey on his feet in October.
“Positives to take from the fight. At least I can say I have a good chin!” Macy laughed.
“There’s no shame in losing to an elite fighter like that. I’ll come back and I’ll get back to that level as well.
“He goes through everyone, doesn’t he? He’s an elite fighter, and he showed it.”
“I’m looking forward to his fight with Ramirez. They’re talking about it then. I don’t think he’ll have any trouble. I think he’ll probably get him out of there in less than eight rounds personally. But a good fight while it lasts.”
The Mancunian wants a high-profile fight with Billam-Smith. “We are looking forward to coming back in March and April,” Massey said. “Get a win, then we can push for something big.” Sky Sports.
“Look at what Chris Pillam Smith is saying. This would make a great fight.”
In fact, Massey beat Pellam Smith more than a decade ago, when they were both amateur boxers, in an ABA national final.
“We’ve made a lot of progress since then, but it’s definitely a great fight for me and I’m very confident going in and beating Chris Pillam-Smith,” Massey said.
“We have lost at this level and we both want to rise to this level. It makes sense, whoever wins fights for a world title.
“It definitely makes sense and what a great fight. We both have good chins. We both like to go up against each other. It’s going to be a great fight.”
However, it’s not the fight Billam-Smith is currently looking at.
“To me, it doesn’t really make sense. Jack’s best win is Isaac Chamberlain. He boxed for a world title. [but] “It feels like a big step back and I want to get into the big fights, fights that I can really prepare for,” Belam-Smith said.
“I’ll do my best anyway but the feeling won’t be the same. What will I get by beating Jack? And that’s the way I have to look at it sometimes. I don’t think I’ll get any kind of credit for beating Jack Massey.
“I want to fight at the world title level. That’s what I want to do.”
