DP World Tour: Alejandro Del Rey claims maiden title with Ras Al Khaimah Championship victory | Golf News happymamay

Alejandro Del Rey claimed the biggest win of his career with a dominant four-shot victory in the DP World Tour’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship.

Del Rey led by two on the final day at Al Hamra GC in the United Arab Emirates and never relinquished control, smashing three of his opening five holes to immediately pull away from the chasing pack.

The Spaniard finished with a bogey-free 66 to end the week on 22-under zero and claim his first DP World Tour title, while England’s Marcus Armitage – playing alongside Del Rey and Jason Scrivner – had a four-under 68 to finish second.

Five birdies in the last six holes saw David Puig post a round of 65 on the day and jump into third place ahead of Scrivner, while England’s Joe Dean finished fifth with Ivan Cantero and Sebastian Soderberg.

Former Masters champion Patrick Reed finished eighth in the group featuring Scotland’s Scott Jamieson, while Adrian Sader’s final round included a stunning 68-hole seventh.

Frenchman Adrien Sadier holed out a hole-in-one on the seventh during the final round of the DP World Tour’s Ras Al Khaimah Championship.

How did Del Rey close out the victory in the Middle East?

Del Rey netted the first and fired a shot in the second, with a 10-footer in the fourth minute giving him five shots and complete control of the tournament.

Armitage opened with six straight shots, but scored back-to-back birdies from the seventh to close within three of Del Rey at the turn, only for his playing partner to extend his lead by putting in from the 11th green.

Del Rey recovered a wayward putt on the par-4 fourth to find the green in regulation and a 50-foot hole-in-one for a birdie, then moved six ahead when he added another on the 13th and Armitage failed to match his effort.

Armitage took advantage of the fourteenth goal to reduce the gap, but he was unable to approach Del Rey, who ended his bogey-free round with an equalizing shot before being received by several Spanish players in the green 18th minute.

“It’s amazing,” Del Rey said. “I got to a point last year where I felt like I wasn’t having much fun on the course, because – for me – just playing 20th and 30th wasn’t meaningful.

“I’ve worked hard since then because I didn’t want to stay in that position any longer. I feel like I’ve played for so many years with a lot of friends who have won here and I know I can do it. It hasn’t shown up. I’m glad it’s finally here.”
