Harry Maguire admits Ruben Amorim’s job is much tougher because he is the “complete opposite” of Erik ten Hag, but he backed the Manchester United coach to turn around a dismal season.
Amorim have been beaten in half of their 10 matches since being appointed head coach and are approaching Monday’s league clash against Newcastle, live. Sky SportsAfter losing three consecutive matches in all competitions.
The Portuguese inherited a team that Ten Hag built to play transitional, counter-attacking football, making them woefully unsuitable for his philosophy, which focuses on possession and spreading out in a high line.
Amorim also has the added complication of preferring to play with a three-man defence, but Maguire believes he has what it takes to overcome his difficult start and push the club, currently 14th, up the table.
“It’s about the coaches and the styles, it’s not like they came in and had similar styles,” Maguire told Sky Sports. “They are complete opposites in terms of what they want and what they demand.
“So the transition period will be difficult. We all have great confidence in the coach and all his coaching staff. I’m sure things will change. He knows exactly what he has to do to get this club back.”
“He came in and did everything he had to do. He’s really demanding.”
United are closer on points to the relegation zone than the Champions League places ahead of the visit of Newcastle, their final match of 2024, after their 2-0 defeat at Wolves.
Amorim, who will be without captain Bruno Fernandes after receiving a red card, has already been asked about the possibility of being sacked after less than two months on the job.
Asked if Amorim was frustrated by the poor results, Maguire added: “He’s a winner, so I’m sure he will because he hates losing games.”
“It’s frustrating. We want to win football games and make our fans happy because so far this season it hasn’t been good enough.”
United need a positive result to ease the pressure on their new coach and lift the mood at Old Trafford, but they will face promoted Newcastle before facing league leaders Liverpool a week later, another live match. Sky Sports.
Maguire says there have been no talks about goals inside the dressing room because of the difficult situation they find themselves in.
He said: “We are doing everything we can to climb the standings. We can’t really set a target at the moment because we are not close enough and we are not close to where we want to be in the league table.”
“What we’ve done so far is really disappointing. Everyone knows that. We know it’s not good enough for this club.”
