Majborough produced a tremendous performance to take the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Beginners Chase at Fairyhouse.
Willie Mullins elected to go straight over the fences with his champion Triumph Hurdle and looked a natural as he progressed at the head of affairs.
His stablemates Tullyhill and Asian Master kept tabs on him, and it was Tullyhill – who was also an intelligent performer in his prolific days – who proved the greater threat.
However, it was only a brief challenge as the four-year-old Magboro and Mark Walsh rocketed off the final leg to win by six and a half lengths as favorite for equal money.
“He was pretty good. There were some little rookie mistakes, but I don’t mind that for his first outing,” Walsh said.
“He had to do it the hard way at the front, but when Paul (Townend, at Tullyhill) got to him we were going well over the last two races and he was good and brilliant at handling them.”
“Because of his size, fences were always his thing and it was a great introduction to him.
“He moved forward, he wasn’t keen on me. He’s got the gears and he’s going to stay, so he’s a player we’re looking forward to.”
“Willie’s other two horses in the race were no slouch, so it was a good test for him.”
Frank Berry, racing director for owner JP McManus, added: “He jumped well and Mark was happy with him.
“We will see how he comes out of this situation and the second-tier NAS Championship (on January 5) could be an option. We can only be happy with the way he won and his jump.”
Mullins struck again when Townend’s ripping Judicieuse Allen (7/1) produced an irresistible late charge to stand in the McInerney Properties Rated Novice Chase.
“She jumped for fun but she was doing too much sometimes throughout the race, so when they raced around me three times, I tried to go with them without fully committing,” Townend said.
“I had to give her a chance to recharge the batteries and she got a good jump at the end. She has a big heart and found a lot in her running.
“She loves jumping fences and stays in good shape. She doesn’t mind that ground and will keep going on slower ground as well.”
Reflecting on Tullyhill in the first race, he said: “I thought it was a great race, it was a good race.
“I’d say we lost to a very good horse, but I’ll be happy with him if he can build on that.”
