Ruben Amorim must realize that the Premier League exists on a different planet to Portuguese football, says Paul Merson, as Manchester United prepare to face Liverpool on Super Sunday.
The manager – who replaced Erik Ten Hag in November, joining from Sporting Lisbon – has struggled for results and performances since arriving at Old Trafford.
Since beating Manchester City 2-1, Manchester United have lost their last four matches in all competitions, including a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle. This prompted Amorim to admit that his team is in a relegation battle.
Their task won’t get any easier either, as they face in-form Liverpool at the top of the Premier League at Anfield, live. Sky Sports This weekend.
talk on Football showMerson gave his view on the current state of Manchester United and why Amorim needs to adapt quickly to the rigors of the Premier League.
Merson tells Amorim: The English Premier League exists on a different planet from Portuguese football
With their form, it probably means they are in a relegation battle, and will face Southampton at home in their next league game. You’d expect them to win that game, but right now, it’s not a good watch.
When the teams came out that day [against Newcastle]I think they did a good job to keep the score at 2-0.
[Christian] Eriksen and Casemiro were outstanding players, but in order to play them in midfield, the coach must get used to understanding that this is not Portuguese football. This is the Premier League now. It’s a different planet from Portuguese football.
When he is set up with them in midfield against [Sandro] Tonali, Bruno [Guimaraes] And Jolinton, I thought, ‘These two are going to be absolutely destroyed.’ As I said, I think they did a good job when they only lost by two goals.
I don’t know how much money they made from Financial Fair Play. They have a lot of players they need to get rid of at the same time. This is a difficult task [at Man Utd].
You’re talking about one of the biggest clubs in the world… but at the moment, they’re everywhere.
The way he wants to play does not suit Manchester United. They don’t have the personnel to play the way he wants to play. The most important thing when you’re playing with a three-man defense is that you have to have a quality wing-back – and they don’t have a quality wing-back. Both full-backs are good defensively, but not great in attack.
Amorim would have suited Chelsea better than Manchester United
I’ve said it many times, I think the manager would have suited Chelsea. Don’t get me wrong, Enzo Maresca was fantastic, but if you had to pick a Premier League club for him to play the way Amorim wants to play, you’d put him at Chelsea. Chelsea have a lot of quick midfielders.
They have great full-backs [Ben] Chilwell, [Malo] tendency, [Reece] James – A natural wing-back who can go forward and defend.
They have midfielders with legs [Moises] Caicedo W [Romeo] Lafia, and then they have the talent to move forward. I think he will tick the box at Chelsea. With Manchester United, I don’t see how it fits.
There is a lot of work to be done to get to the way he wants to play, and it will take a long time with a lot of players coming in and out. And with the way the rules are now, I don’t know how long that will take.
“Manchester United’s victory over Liverpool will be the biggest shock in the English Premier League.”
If Manchester United beats Liverpool this weekend, it will be the biggest shock in the Premier League.
Whatever happens in any of the other results this weekend, even if West Ham beat Manchester City, it won’t be a bigger shock than Manchester United beating Liverpool. That’s how far you went.
The only thing you can hope for if you’re a Manchester United fan is a 0-0 scoreline. I know they beat Manchester City, but let’s be honest, Manchester City were very comfortable until the last 10 minutes of that game.
I’m worried about Manchester United. If Liverpool score early, I dread to think what that result would be.
