Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim insisted that his team has bigger problems than Manchester City, despite the disappointing level of its rivals.
City, which travels to Old Trafford on Sunday to participate in the Manchester derby – Live on the skyThey are facing their worst form since Pep Guardiola took over the club in 2016.
The Premier League champions have won just once of their last 10 matches in all competitions in a spell that has also seen them lose five in a row.
United’s fortunes have improved slightly after a rocky start under new manager Amorim. The Reds lost their last two Premier League matches to Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, but came back to beat Viktoria Plzeň on Thursday in the Europa League to give Amorim their third win in six matches. Despite City’s lack of fortune, Amorim believes Guardiola’s side still pose a threat.
“They are so good at what they do, they can change that momentum at any time,” Amorim said. Sky Sports.
“They are a very strong team and have worked together for many years. They have won a lot but they have also lost a lot. We have a bigger problem because we are working on simple things but we want to win like Manchester City.”
“It’s not a game where the two teams are experiencing the greatest moment of the season, but it’s always a derby and we want to win it.”
Amorim earned his first cap against Guardiola’s City in November as Sporting coach. Sporting’s 4-1 win over City in the Champions League handed them what was then a third successive defeat during their winless run.
However, for Amorim, Sporting’s win has no bearing on the upcoming derby, and instead, the United manager is relishing the opportunity to see how his team react in the derby atmosphere.
“We can’t use too much of that [Sporting] The game but it helped us understand the game and feel that the game is very close.
“We have a lot to do, not just in the match. But we are looking at the way we are going to play. I am excited to see the behavior of our players, in this type of match – to learn a lot about our players.”
Amorim will celebrate his first full month in charge of Old Trafford after playing nine matches in 30 days. With little time in training to teach the change in system, Amorim reiterated the need for patience during the club’s transition period.
“This should be like pre-season, where I get to know my players but we do it in competition,” Amorim said.
“You always have surprises. You have an idea of the player and you have a surprise or two in good and bad ways.
“I already know that it is a big task, and it will take some time. Forget me as a coach, the club needs time. This is an important thing that everyone must understand and we have to focus on every detail. Not only the result, we want to win but we have to improve a lot.”
