Matt Bloomfield: Luton Town appoint Wycombe Wanderers boss as new manager following Rob Edwards’ exit | Football News happymamay

Matt Bloomfield has left promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers to become the new manager at Luton.

Bloomfield joined the Championship club on a three-and-a-half-year contract, leaving Wycombe second in League One and two points behind leaders Birmingham.

The 40-year-old replaces Rob Edwards, who left Luton by mutual consent last week after just over two years in charge.

Edwards had led the club to the Premier League in 2023 but were unable to sustain it and struggled to adapt to life back in the Championship with seven wins from 26 matches, leaving them two points above the relegation zone.

Luton said they had “complied with all compensation requests made by Wycombe” to sign Bloomfield, who brought in his assistant Richard Thomas, first-team coach Lee Harrison and senior analyst Ben Cerne.

Bloomfield will take charge of Saturday’s home Championship clash against Preston North End.

Bloomfield said: “It is a real honor and privilege to be here, to be appointed manager of this fantastic club.

“I’m really, really proud. It’s been a busy few days, a very busy weekend, but I’ve met the recruiting team, met my neighbor and spent some time with the board.”

“The fact that they are all Luton supporters and that they care so much about their football club, and the fact that they have a real big desire for me to join our football club, also stood out, so I’m very proud and I’m very happy to be here.

“It’s made me feel very comfortable and wanted, which is a big thing for me. I want to work with people who care and fans who care too – and they certainly do here. I want to work with people who want what’s best for their football.” The club, and this is even more evident with Gary, the Chairman and the Board of Directors.

“That feeling they gave me, the feeling of being wanted by them, the amount of research they did on me and the football team we created at Colchester and Wycombe, the knowledge base of what I represented, who I was and what we tried to achieve in our football team kept me going through uncertain times that these It was the right move at the right time.

Bloomfield played over 500 games as a midfielder for Wycombe over 19 years. He took over as manager in February 2023 after five months at Colchester and earned 87 points during 2024, scoring 107 goals in all competitions and reaching the EFL Cup Final.

Luton chief executive Gary Sweet added: “It is with great pleasure and excitement that we can announce the appointment of Matt on a long-term contract.

“Before anything else, I would like to thank Wycombe for their cooperation in ensuring a quick and smooth transition. It can be nice to be on the receiving end, which is never fun, but we made sure we went above and beyond. And beyond to compensate Wycombe for securing His services, along with a reliable training team.

“Over the years as a club we have been promoted to the Premier League, Matt has faced us every step of the way as a respected leader of his team, and together we have always shared our hunger and desire to improve and reach the next level.

“Since our return to Wycombe as coach, we have been hugely impressed with his work in leading them back to the top of League One, and particularly in how he has done so in an entertaining way, creating a reputation for attacking football.

“We have identified Matt’s personal qualities and team building skills as an outstanding candidate who will fit into the culture we have long established here at Luton Town, and I am sure all supporters will join me in welcoming him, along with Richard, Lee and Ben, to Kenilworth Road.

“Finally, I would just like to thank the tremendous amount of work and attention to detail our recruitment team put into identifying the best candidate and impressing them in meetings, along with the fantastic, as always, unanimous support from the Board in arriving at a quick decision after interviewing Matt. “
