Chelsea FC have agreed a world record fee with the San Diego Wave for defender Naomi Girma.
A deal worth around £890,000 ($1.1 million) has been settled between the two clubs, breaking the current record of £695,000 ($860,000) when Rachael Kundanangi moved to Bay FC from Madrid FC.
The centre-back is expected to undergo a medical in London later this week and becomes Blues manager Sonia Bombastor’s first January signing for the club.
The transfer comes after Chelsea signed Levante striker Mayra Ramirez in January last year for a British record fee of £384,000, plus up to £42,600 in add-ons.
Girma reported for the first day of pre-season training in San Diego on Tuesday, but it appears this was her last training session with the club, which is managed by former Arsenal coach Jonas Edvall.
US international Girma has made 44 appearances for her country and won a gold medal with Team USA at the 2024 Olympics.
The 24-year-old was also named the 2023 US Soccer Player of the Year.
Chelsea is at the top of the Women’s Premier League table, seven points behind Arsenal, and has qualified for the knockout stages of the Women’s Champions League.
