The future of Nick Kirgius tennis was not clear as the final in the former Wimbledon championship continued for his first victory in 2025 after his retirement with a wrist in Indian Wales.
The Australian withdrew from his match in the first round against Bootic Van De Zandschulp while he was lagging behind 7-6 (9-7) 3-0 after looking near tears during a medical period.
Kyrgios is now 0-3 so far this year after the defeat of Jacob Vernelli in the Australian Open after a loss by Giovanni Mbisi Perkard in Brisbane International.
The 29 -year -old played only one match in 2023 and missed the entire 2024 due to injury and surgeries on his right wrist and knee.
“All of this is an experience at this stage,” Kergius said after his withdrawal.
“I was told that I may not have played tennis again. [But] I feel like there. I feel I can compete.
“I am there, but if I am not able to finish the matches, this doesn’t really matter at this point. I am not very sure now. I’m not even … I am not sure how to pull them tomorrow.
“I want to go there and want to compete. If I don’t really want to play, I don’t have to rehabilitate, I didn’t have to return to the field. I want to play.”
In response to a question about whether he will now play in the Miami Open Championship from 18 to 30 March, Kirgius said: “The time frame is not perfect, but I was to play, so I will see how my wrist responds.
“If Miami is not, I will continue to look forward. I can’t continue to look back and disappointed. Otherwise, I don’t know how much enjoyment I will get in it.”
