Ange Postecoglou admitted he is “very hurt” by Tottenham’s decline in form, but still feels he can compete towards the top this season in the Premier League.
Injury-hit Tottenham were on course to end a torrid December on a high after first-half goals from Rodrigo Bentancur and Brennan Johnson canceled out Hee-Chan Hwang’s impressive run for Wolves.
Tottenham captain Heung-Min Son also missed a penalty in the 43rd minute, but it didn’t look like it would prove too costly until visiting substitute Jurgen Strand-Larsen scored three minutes from time to ensure they shared the spoils in north London.
Tottenham will start 2025 in the bottom half after one win in their last seven Premier League games, yet Postecoglou has rallied around his depleted squad, with Destiny Udoji the latest to limp out as the ninth player unavailable.
“It hurts me because I am responsible,” he said.
“When I see how hard the players try, it hurts even more. I wanted them to get rewards for their efforts. It hurts a lot. It’s my responsibility where we are now.
“I’ll keep going my friend, we have work to do to get some help with these players. Our role is to help them give their best. I can see how hard they are trying. If we were at our utmost.” We would have scored the third and fourth goals, and we were inches away.
“We lack the dynamic movement we need. Where’s my cock?” [Kulusevski] Get energy from? Dom [Solanke]Sony. These guys fight energy and are not as smart as we can be.
“We are handling it well and nothing is going smoothly in terms of players returning to allow us to replenish the squad. When we get a player back, we lose one.”
Angie: The league is still “very tight”
The draw means that Tottenham, who were booed throughout, have failed to win their last five home matches, leaving them in 11th place in the Premier League table with just 24 points from 19 matches.
However, Postecoglou is not giving up hope of progressing towards the top of the Premier League when his key players return.
“It’s still pretty tight,” he said.
“At some point, we will get a healthy team and we will be able to perform at a high level. We have shown that we can beat any team.
“There is always an opportunity to run. This is secondary to having support for the players physically, mentally and in terms of numbers.”
Tottenham finished sixth, just three points behind Chelsea, after a 4-0 win over Manchester City on November 23, but are now closer to the relegation zone than the top four.
Postecoglou refused to be too strict with his players, who will have two days off, with Tottenham set to enjoy a rare midweek break before visiting Newcastle on Saturday where Bentancur will also be suspended.
He added: “We have to try to get some support for the players, mentally, physically and in terms of numbers to give them the opportunity to play at their best.”
“They are very disappointed, but not because they want to try.”
