Tyson Fury’s training partner Moses Itauma has revealed that the former world champion was “a lot different” during the build-up to his heavyweight title rematch with Oleksandr Usyk.
After Usyk in May became the first undisputed heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis, Fury has the opportunity to avenge his first career defeat, live. Sky Sports box office Saturday night.
Itauma, who is considered one of the brightest young prospects in the heavyweight division and fights on the undercard on Saturday, has been part of all of Fury’s training camps to prepare for Usyk.
“He is a lot different. His mentality has changed,” Itauma said at a large arrival ceremony held on Tuesday in Riyadh.
“He’s not the nice guy anymore. He was actually there for training.”
“Usually, when I did [previously] We trained with him in Saudi Arabia and Morecambe, we would compete together, carry the bags, milk together, run together, do strength and conditioning together, but this time he was just focusing on doing it himself.
“And he used to say: I am a lone soldier, I am a lone wolf.”
He added, “He was getting hit hard and was screaming. I was saying to myself, ‘This guy is crazy.’ But to participate in this sport, you have to be a little crazy.”
Itauma insists Fury’s motivation for an immediate rematch is not financial, but his compatriot is simply driven by a burning desire to avenge defeat.
He added, “I don’t think Tyson is doing it for the money. So, if he’s not doing it for the money, why would he do it?”
“Because he really wants to beat Oleksandr Usyk, and if he did it for the money, he would have packed his bags a long time ago.
“So, with that in mind, people have to keep that in mind. Saturday night, Tyson Fury is coming to fight, coming to win.
“I don’t feel like he’s going to come in and get hit, because he probably hasn’t practiced. And trust me, I was in training camp, and he was practicing hard.”
